Events and Festival

• Navroz: This festival is celebrated by the Shia Muslims in March or April. This festival comes a week after the New Year day. The Shia Muslims celebrate this 9-day festival with great food items and wearing fine clothes, praying at mosques, greetings and feasting at home.
• Urs or Ziarats: It is a typical Kashmiri festival which is held annually at the shrines of Muslim saints on their death anniversaries. Urs is celebrated in different parts of Srinagar, not only by Muslims but also by Hindus and Sikhs. An interesting feature of the Urs celebrations at Batamaloo and in Anantag is that both Muslims and Hindus do not take meat during the course of this festival. Urs (or Ziarats) has a significance of its own in the sense that it reflects an intercommunal participation unnoticed in most other festivals in India.
• Ramzan: It is a month of fasting as in the Muslim calendar. During the month of Ramzan, Muslims abstain from eating or drinking during the day. It is only after sunset that they have fruits and all types of food. The festival also marks a spirit of charity and showing love towards the poor and needy.

Attire: Traditional Indian clothing for women are the saris or the salwar kameez and also gaghra cholis(lehengas). Saris are a graceful elegant clothing. Ones made out of silk are the most elegant and lots of people love them. Women's clothing in India varies widely and is closely related to local culture, religion and climate. For men, traditional clothes are the kurta. In south India men wear long, white sheets of cloth. In north Indian languages like Hindi, Marathi and Oriya these are called dhoti, while in Tamil they are called veshti. Over the dhoti, men wear shirts, tshirts, or anything else.
Office Hours and Holidays: Government and private offices are open from 10 AM to 6 PM, Monday to Saturday. Mall hours are usually from 8 AM to 9 PM at summer time and 10 Am to 7 Pm winter time.
